The Dillard Doctrine

Urban Conservative Commentary on Politics & Life

Clinton’s Supporters Aren’t Much Better, Though….

From the founder of BET-that pantheon of blackness-on Barack Obama:

“What I believe Geraldine Ferraro meant is that if you take a freshman senator from Illinois called ‘Jerry Smith’ and he says I’m going to run for president, would he start off with 90 percent of the black vote?” Johnson said. “And the answer is, probably not.”

“Geraldine Ferraro said it right,” Johnson added. “The problem is, Geraldine Ferraro is white. This campaign has such a hair-trigger on anything racial it is almost impossible for anybody to say anything.”

I agree……to a point.

I think the Obama campaign would be completely different if he were white. For one, you can’t run as the “candidate of change” as a white man (sorry, Sen. McCain, but it ain’t working for you either). Nor would said caucasian start off with a significant number of blacks backing him, though that 90% number is in dispute.

Here’s where I agree: The Obama campaign and its supporters-for all the talk about being a campaign of “change-” are almost suppressing the right of free speech for anyone who says anything negative about Obama by putting their comments in a cloud of racism.

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT TO EXCUSE ANYTHING SAID BY REP. DAVIS YESTERDAY. ISN’T THERE A SONG ABOUT HANGING A DAVIS FROM A SOUR APPLE TREE SOMEWHERE?
Yes, there have been some ill-advised comments going around about Obama, both on the left and right. One could argue that Obama’s made a couple of suspect comments himself (“typical white person,” anyone?). But sometimes the “racist!!” flag has been thrown when it probably shouldn’t have, or where it really didn’t need to.
And-keep this in mind-the 527s have been out of play so far this campaign season. God help Obama when they start showing up.
I’ve said this before, and will keep saying it: free speech is free speech. Just because I don’t like it, that doesn’t makes a statement overtly racist (‘cept for you, Geoff. You’re not getting a pass.). Not only that, but to keep throwing the flag whenever something is said, or to twist someone’s words to give it that “racist!!” slant you need to prove your point, ultimately turns people off to your cause.
