Declaring Victory….and Coming Home

Apparently, the Iraqis feel like they can manage the security of their own country. Good for them.

Over the last few days, both President Bush and Prime Minister Maliki agreed on a “time horizon” for the withdrawal of American troops. Not long thereafter, Mr. Maliki decided it would be good if our military was out within 16 months-mimicking an idea put forth by the junior senator from Illinois. And yesterday, there was this:

“We are hoping that in 2010 that combat troops will withdraw from Iraq,” al-Dabbagh told reporters, noting that any withdrawal plan was subject to change if the level of violence kicks up again.

Is it safe now to assume that we won the Iraq War? Will the surge now be validated as the strategy that turned Iraq towards a brighter future? Are all the assessments that were incorrectly made by the government (such as the insurgency being in its “last throes” in 2005-6) now true, two or three years after they were spoken?

Or will this moment be used for political posturing by both parties to prove their respective points?

Seems more like the latter than the former.

However, if the Iraqis feel like they can manage their country, that’s a good thing. And we should seriously begin looking at drawing down our forces there. There’s an opportunity for us to exit Iraq with the victory we’ve been looking for-being able to leave with the country in the hands of a stable, secure government. Which, contrary to popular-liberal?-opinion, was the whole point in the first place. We gave the Iraqis something they had never had in their existence-the opportunity to choose, for themselves, their way of life and the direction of their country. And now they want the ball.

Fair enough. We should let them have it. Take charge, guys.

We’ve won. Let’s come home.

Disclaimer: My opinon, and not that of any group I work with….and will continue to work with and support. Just so we’re clear.
