How to Lose an Election

I’ve ranted about the tactical missteps of the McCain campaign. Unfortunately….the missteps just keep on comin’.

And the media is starting to take notice and ask the same question I want to know the answer to: WTF?

About a week ago, thee Wall Street Journal asked, point blank, “Is John McCain Stupid?” Some excerpts:

What I’m asking is, does John McCain have the mental focus, the intellectual discipline, to avoid being out-slicked by Barack Obama, if he isn’t abandoned by his own voters?

The one thing — arguably the only thing — the McCain candidacy has going for it is a sense among voters that they don’t know what Barack Obama stands for or believes. Why then would Mr. McCain give voters reason to wonder the same thing about himself? You’re supposed to sow doubt about the other guy, not do it to yourself.

Yeah, exactly. What the hell is McCain really doing?

Let’s see:

1. The dhimmicrats finally choose a nominee….and he steals part of his site design AND his (in)famous campaign slogan.

2. McCain challenges his opponent to go to Iraq. He goes…and McCain spends the next week attacking him for blowing off a visit to a military hospital. Let’s be real-had Obama set foot in Landsthul, McCain would’ve called him a panderer.

3. Oh, yeah…..then he says that Obama’s timetable for withdrawing from Iraq sounds “pretty good.” Even though McCain’s been against timetables your entire campaign.

4. Then-in a move even his own mom called “stupid,” McCain calls his opponent a “Celebrity,” using Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. Disclaimer: I can’t knock him too much on that ad; the ad sucked, but it did lead to some of the funniest ads of this campaign season.

So, how is McCain gonna lose this election?

1. By not acting presidential. McCain needs to be acting like the elder statesman he appeared to be-somewhat-during the primaries…and not the jealous, attention-starved schoolboy he’s been acting like. McCain’s new slogan, “Country First,” works… long as he does ads around that theme, and not around attacking Obama on the minutiae. He’s not good at negative campaigning; besides, his surrogates should be doing that for him.

2. By not focusing on the issues. Memo to John McCain: no one cares about Paris and Britney. No one cares that Obama didn’t go to Landstuhl anymore. People care about the price of gas. They care about the threat posed by Islamic extremists. They care about losing their homes.

You have solutions to these problems. Talk about them. Attack Obama on why his solutions won’t work. That’s what people want to hear.

Cause if you continue on your current path, I’ll see you at the inauguration.

As a spectator.
