PoTD:Never Surrender: A Soldier’s Journey to the Crossroads of Faith and Freedom

Never Surrender is the memoir of LTG William “Jerry” Boykin, one of the original members of the Army’s Delta Force. Boykin details his military career (or more accurately, the unclassified aspects of it) and tells how his faith guided him throug-and sometimes, conflicted with-his duties in uniform.

The first I had ever heard of LTG Boykin was when someone mentioned a “crazy rightwint general” who said that “his god was bigger than the Somalis.” To which I thought, WTF? The story of that incident-and what really happened-is recounted in the book.

There’s also a mention of one “Navy Commander Larry Bailey,” who just happens to be the head of Gathering of Eagles (see the link to the right). CAPT Bailey is a retired SEAL, and verified a couple parts of the book where his name was mentioned.

Overall, a pretty good-and quick, at just 368 pages-read. I’m no evangelical, but none of Boykin’s actions relating to his faith-praying before missions or at the side of his wounded soldiers-strike me as anything that anyone would take offense at.  Even reading some of the articles about Boykin, it’s easy to see the bias against him because of his public expressions of faith and its relation to his service.

Always amazing how a thirty second soundbite can completely tarnish years of honest, faithful service.
