What You Should Really Take from Troopergate

So, an independent investigator finds that the Governor of Alaska didn’t actually break any laws, but that she abused her power in the firing of her Public Safety Commissioner. And, of course, Palin’s own investigators cleared her of any wrongdoing.

Predictable on all sides. Can we get back to fixing those economic problems now?

Well, not yet. Couple of thoughts:

I’m not sure why, exactly, Palin’s catching heat here. She didn’t actually do anything wrong. In fact, in the investigator’s report, there’s no recommendation for repercussive action against Palin. Her husband-the prospective “First Dude” (technically, wouldn’t that be McCain, as Palin would be the Vice President?)-is the one who was actually out of line; Palin just let him stay there. My thing is, though…did Todd really do anything different than any other man would’ve done, when faced with the same type of threats? Would any man (or woman, for that matter) have just stood idly by while members of his family were threatened…especially if they were coming from someone who is a law enforcement officer?

Didn’t think so. So, for that, Todd Palin actually deserves some credit for standing up for his family.

However…taking advantage of your wife’s position was not smart, Todd. And allowing him to do so wasn’t smart either, Sarah. So, for that, you’re both boneheads.

Now, will this really have any effect of the state of the race to date? It shouldn’t; the people who will cry foul weren’t gonna vote for McCain/Palin anyway, and the ones who will defend her are her closest, strongest supporters. Nothing will-should?-shift either way.

Now, back to that economy…..
