The Dillard Doctrine

Urban Conservative Commentary on Politics & Life

Is This Smart?

From the WaPo, the wisdom of DC’s city council:

The D.C. Council approved emergency legislation this evening that will allow District bars, nightclubs and restaurants to serve alcohol until 5 a.m. — three hours later than usual — and remain open for food around the clock from Jan. 17 until the morning after Obama’s swearing-in Jan. 20.

The only day the city regularly extends normal drinking hours is Jan. 1, when bars are allowed to keep serving alcohol until 4 a.m. But the legislation quickly drew the ire of civic leaders, who complained that the council did not seek public input. The new rules could create more noise and problems for residents, said activists who have fought for tougher restrictions on bars and restaurant.

On a normal week, bars and nightclubs can serve alcohol until 2 a.m. on weekdays and until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The only day the city regularly extends normal drinking hours is Jan. 1, when bars are allowed to keep serving alcohol until 4 a.m.

As I told a friend during the Long Commute last night, this has all the makings of a “When ‘Keepin it Real’ Goes Wrong episode.

Is it really a good idea to allow for-what’s essentially-public drunkeness in a city that only recently got the right to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights? Get the wrong combination of drunk Obama supporters and strapped non-Obama supporters together, and watch what happens.

I’m not a betting mad (unless I’m 100% sure I’m correct), but if I had to pick a day for the looming incident that will happen as a result of this, um, lapse in judgement, I’d go with the day before the election.

Which, coincidentially, happens to be MLK Day.

Hope I’m wrong.
