If You Don’t Have Something Smart to Say…

…yes, the series returns. From (via the Weekly Standard blog, with emphasis added):

Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., also defended the (Chris) Hill nomination (for Ambassador to Iraq) and downplayed the importance of having an ambassador who knows a lot about Iraq. “We have ambassadors that go all over the world that don’t have any experience in the areas that they run,” Levin said.

Never mind that we’re talking about Iraq here, not the Bahamas. What does it say about the Foreign Service when someone suggests that assigning ambassadors to countries where they have no experience is common practice?

Does that make any good sense?
