A Second American Revolution

This Saturday marks the 233rd year of our independence from tyranny; an independence won with violence and bloodshed. Yet today, our country stands at a crossroads, crying out for leadership and guidance.

For most of our modern history, we have been governed by a political system that has its own self-preservation as its foremost interest. Our politicians today make promises that they have no intention of keeping, dressing them up in vague notions such as “hope” and “change” for the mere purpose of winning an election. And once elected, they forget that they are true employees of the people and begin to hold themselves above the law, leading to a moral and ideological corruption rendering them unfit to hold the title of “public servant.”

Yet the average American, time and again, votes to return these same people to their elected offices. We complain about how they don’t represent us and claim that this year we’re going to throw the bums out, but each January they take their seats at the head of government. We have become a nation where the first question we ask our candidates isn’t what they truly believe and stand for, but how much money they’ve raised.

This year, we’ve seen a movement spring up that shows what “we the people” are truly capable of when faced with a government out of control. The Tea Party Patriots have stood against those locally and in Washington who would seek to impose an agenda on this country that we cannot afford. They have taken their message across the country-and the world-and even in ridiculing them, our leaders in Washington have received their message.

Their message today is no different from what was said in the Declaration of Independence: that when a government seeks to reduce the people to a form of tyranny, it is the people’s right to cast aside that government and find those among them who will not be corrupted by the power of elected office. It is our duty, when faced with an agenda that seeks to reduce us to mere wards of the state, to stand together in opposition to that agenda.

For those who feel that our government no longer acts in our best interests, July 4th is a good day to continue the fight  to take our country back. We are the heirs to the legacy of those patriots who mutually pledged their “lives, fortunes and sacred honor” to birth this great nation. We can-and should-be willing to sacrifice no less.
