If You Don’t Have Something Smart to Say…

I could also title this “stick to what you know….”

“This remark is the equivalent of using the ‘n’ word. It shows contempt for middle America, expressed knowingly, contemptuously, on purpose, and with a smirk. It is indefensible to use this word. The president knows what it means, and his people know what it means. The public thought we reached a new low of incivility during the Clinton administration. Well, the Obama administration has just outdone them.”

That’d be Grover Norquist of ATR fame, comparing the use of the term “teabagger” to the use of the n-word. And I’m sorry, but as one who’s been called both (once in combination), it doesn’t compare.

I’m certain-to the point of being willing to wager my small salary-that Norquist has never been called “n—-r.” So for him to try to compare a sexual slang term to a word that’s been historically used as derogatory is, at best, ignorant (and if he ever used it himself, that’d make him an ignorant hypocrite, which may be worse). Not to mention that, as a matter of perception, the absolute last group of people that should be even thinking about making that comparison is a movement which is predominately non-minority. I seriously doubt even the minorities who are part of the movement are willing to go this far.

This is what happens when people try to make their “movement of the minute” into the second Civil Rights Movement. And it’s not just the tea party (as people have tried to make that comparison as well)…it’s environmentalists, gay rights advocates, really anyone who has a cause they want to draw people to. Eventually, someone slips up and makes a comparison that either shows their ignorance or is just so over the top that it becomes laughable.

Maybe Mr. Norquist should bounce his thoughts off Rep. John Lewis and see what he thinks. I’m sure that’d be an educational conversation.
