Statement on Passage of H.R. 2454

This evening, the House voted on and passed H.R. 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security Act. This bill contains the provision commonly known as “cap and trade,” which is no more than a drastic tax increase to fund fulfillment of some of President Obama’s campaign promises.

Joining in support of this bill was Rep. Bobby Scott (D), who represents part of Hampton Roads. His Democratic counterpart in this area, Rep. Glenn Nye, voted to oppose the bill. This is not the first time that Rep. Scott has opted to put his own liberal agenda above the true needs and wants of his constituents.

Rep. Scott represents the type of politician that the Republican Party leadership in Virginia should be willing to challenge during next year’s elections. Having served seven terms in Congress without serious opposition, the Republican Party of Virginia should make Scott’s district a battleground for next year’s elections. The people of Virginia’s 3rd District deserve a representative who will carry their best interests to Washington, instead of being a blind cheerleader to an agenda that sounds good, but does not well represent them.

While the RPV is rightly focused on this year’s statewide elections, I will continue to monitor and educate on Rep. Scott’s obsessive obedience to a liberal agenda that does not well serve the people of the 3rd District or the citizens of this Commonwealth.
